ABOUT XENICAL:  Questions and Answers
How does Xenical Work?
Dietary fats need to be broken down in the intestinal tract by special enzymes called lipases before they can be absorbed into the body. When you take Xenical with a meal, Xenical inhibits these lipase enzymes from working. Therefore, about 30% of the dietary fat eaten passes through the body undigested, and your body can not turn these excess calories into body fat.
How does Xenical differ from other diet drugs?
Xenical, unlike any other drug previously available for weight loss, is NOT absorbed into the system and therefore does not cause systemic side effects.  Xenical only works locally in the intestinal tract preventing dietary fat absorption.
Can I take other diet drugs or over-the-counter products with Xenical?
Since Xenical is not a systemic drug, it can safely be combined with Meridia or phentermine or any other prescription drug or non-prescription diet aid.  Xenical can safely be added to any diet regimen or used in conjunction with any commercial diet program.
Are there any side effect of Xenical?
There are no known major side effects from Xenical  It's 100% SAFE. A large percentage of patients treated with Xenical experience some mild gastrointestinal side effects initially, mainly loose stools.  These GI symptoms occur early in the treatment, but resolve spontaneously and most often limited to one or two episodes per patient.
Do I need to follow a diet or take vitamin supplements while on Xenical?
It is recommended that patients eat a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypo caloric diet rich in fruit and vegetables containing 30% fat. Since Xenical decreases fat absorption, it can also decrease the absorption of the fat-soluble Vitamins A,D,E,& K.  Therefore, it is recommended that you take a high-grade multi-vitamin supplement while on Xenical.
When do I take Xenical?
The recommended Xenical dose is 120 mg capsule with each meal (during or up to one hour after the meal).  If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose of Xenical may be omitted.
